Facts
about Habitat for Humanity
- Mount
Washington Valley Habitat for Humanity is a state chartered non-profit
organization - a 501C(3) IRS tax deductible organization, and is an
affiliate of Habitat
for Humanity International.
- Habitat
for Humanity houses are built with volunteer labor, and to the extent
possible, with donated materials. Design is kept simple but adequate.
- Habitat
for Humanity is an organization based on Christian principles to help
those who can help themselves. It offers a hand-up, not a hand-out.
Each HH homeowner is expected to provide hundreds of hours of sweat
equity, a small down-payment, and to become a mortgage holder and to
be a full tax-paying property owner.
- In
a survey of donors, HH received an approval ratio of between 8 and 10
(on a scale of 1 to 10). The next closest organization was the Red Cross
with a score of 7.
- Habitat
for Humanity is not a give-away program -- it helps people help themselves.
Houses are built with volunteer labor, and to the extent possible, with
donated materials. Habitat for Humanity homeowners become regular tax-paying
citizens.
- A
gift to the local Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity is also a gift to
the
Habitat for
Humanity International. The local Affiliates "tithe" to
Habitat International, thus helping unfortunate people the world over
to acquire affordable housing.
